Quick answer: To turn decimal hours back into hours and minutes, keep the whole-number hours and multiply the fractional part by 60. For example, 7.25 hours becomes 7 hours and 15 minutes.

Need the opposite conversion? The BuzBolt Time Calculator converts hours and minutes into a decimal value.

Convert a decimal time value step by step

Take 7.35 hours. The whole number is 7 hours. The remaining fraction is 0.35; 0.35 × 60 = 21 minutes. The answer is therefore 7 hours 21 minutes.

This is different from reading the digits after the decimal point as clock minutes. A value of 7.58 decimal hours is about 7 hours 35 minutes after rounding (0.58 × 60 = 34.8).

Decimal-to-clock-time lookup

Decimal hoursHours and minutesWhy
0.100 h 6 m0.10 × 60 = 6
0.250 h 15 m0.25 × 60 = 15
1.501 h 30 m0.50 × 60 = 30
4.754 h 45 m0.75 × 60 = 45
7.357 h 21 m0.35 × 60 = 21
8.608 h 36 m0.60 × 60 = 36

What should happen when minutes are fractional?

With 2.3333 hours, the fractional part is approximately 0.3333, which corresponds to 19.998 minutes. A sensible display is 2 hours 20 minutes, but the choice of rounding precision depends on the intended use. Preserve the original number when accuracy matters.

Spreadsheet approach

For a non-negative decimal-hour value in A2, the hour component is =INT(A2) and the unrounded minutes are =MOD(A2,1)*60. If you round to a whole minute, handle values that round to 60 by carrying one hour forward. Test your sheet with 1.999 hours before relying on it.

Don't confuse a duration with a time of day

Seven and a half hours is a duration. 07:30 is a clock reading. They may display similar digits, but adding durations and interpreting clock times are different tasks.
