THE METHOD

How to calculate hours worked

Subtract the start time from the finish time, then deduct any unpaid break. For a shift that passes midnight, count the finish time on the following day.

WORKING TIME FORMULATime worked = Finish time − Start time − Unpaid breaks
WORKED EXAMPLE

A shift with a 30-minute break

Starting at 08:30 and finishing at 17:15 gives 8 hours 45 minutes. Deduct a 30-minute unpaid break to get 8 hours 15 minutes, or 8.25 decimal hours.

QUICK REFERENCE

Minutes to decimal hours

Frequently asked questions

Can I calculate time across midnight?

Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the tool treats the end time as occurring the next day. The difference mode is intended for intervals of less than 24 hours.

What are decimal hours?

Decimal hours express minutes as a fraction of an hour. For example, 30 minutes is 0.5 hour, so 8 hours and 30 minutes equals 8.5 decimal hours.

Can I deduct an unpaid lunch break?

Yes. Enter the break length in minutes in Time difference mode. For example, 09:00 to 17:30 is 8 hours 30 minutes before breaks; with a 30-minute break, the result is 8 hours.

Can I calculate a shift longer than 24 hours?

Time difference mode assumes the end time is on the same day or the following day, so it cannot distinguish a shift lasting more than 24 hours from a shorter one. For multi-day work, calculate each day separately or use a timesheet that accepts dates.

Does BuzBolt store my time entries?

No. This calculator processes the values in your browser without submitting them to our server. The PDF is generated on your device.
